“You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestation of your own blessings”
There is no quick fix or magic potion that that will make you healthy, happy and whole. It is the totality of the environment you create which will result in and sustain a healthy body, mind and spirit. There isn’t one drink, pill or herb that is going to fix an issue that is systematic in nature.
As a people, our health and wellbeing has declined to the point that dysfunction in our bodies, minds, spirits, and emotions is completely normal. To feel truly good is an abnormality. We have forgotten what it feels like to wake up inspired, joyful and feeling good physically. We have grown accustomed to aches, pains, taking pills and having the constant experience of feeling like a cloud is over our heads and hovering over our hearts.
Then we will hear word about something that will solve our problems; a magic cure-all so to speak. It could be turmeric, celery, black seed oil or turpentine. We will rush out to get these things and add them to our food and water, thinking this will do it! This will make everything better! But, it won’t. Don’t misunderstand me, these are all viable options, BUT they should be incorporated into an already healthy regime and lifestyle.
The truth is, you will never truly experience the fullness of health and wellbeing until you build a core foundation where health and wellbeing can remain fortified. Our foundations are shaky and unstable and that is why when you add the turmeric (for example) it may land on your foundation, but it will soon fall.
The image that comes to mind is the game Jenga. Hundreds of years ago, our foundation was built in Africa. We were African spirit led, family and community oriented, plant-based eaters with complete knowledge of self. Fast forward nearly 400 years and many jenga blocks have been removed and placed elsewhere only to have our structure leaning and ready to crumble.
Creating an environment where health and healing will thrive is our only hope. This is the ultimate hustle. We need to build a strong foundation and here are 4 ways to do so:
Water is nature’s magic elixir. I know I said that there is no cure all. But water is as close as you are going to get. Water is life! Removing juice, pop, soda, sports drinks, lemonade and other sugary drinks and making water your daily drink of choice is tantamount to health. Water does the following:
- Cleanses your system
- Removes toxins
- Transports vital nutrients throughout the body
- Provides mental clarity & optimal cognitive function
- Clears the skin
- Creates movement in the digestive track & productive bowel movements
I heard a wise man say, “Anything you can’t fast from you are a slave to”. We are slaves to the Standard American Diet. We eat from the moment we wake up, to the moment we go to bed. We overeat, and we eat foods that do not nourish our melanin. When we fast, we finally give our bodies the time it needs to repair, rebuild, and renew. When you fast, your body goes through autophagy (self-eat). When you fast, the body:
- Cleans out the old, defective parts of cells that are no longer useful
- Removes built up toxins that have been circulating.
- Rebuilds the immune system
- Dissipates excess fat in the body and plaque in the arteries
- Slows down the aging process
Plant Based Dieting
When we eat, we must nourish our melanin with the foods that will lead to the optimization of cell, organ and bodily function. The only foods that will do so is plants. We must sever ties with the notion that the flesh of a dead and rotting animals is an acceptable and nutritious food option. We can choose to eat whatever we want, but we must stop justifying our decisions with false information. You are what you eat and when you eat whole, live foods that is what you will become; alive and whole. Food is more than just calories. It is information that tells your DNA what to do. Your food should trigger your DNA to alert your cells that they are to live, repair, renew and heal not die, deteriorate and become dysfunctional. Ideally, we should eat a plethora of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and lentils.
Knowledge of self
Dr. Llaila Afrika said, “melanin is the vital chemical that makes life itself…black people must ‘know thyself’ and to know yourself is to know melanin”. We are melananted beings. We have the highest content of melanin than any other group on the planet. Yet, we are living a life that does not match the reality of our DNA. In many ways, we have forgotten who are and have forgotten how to tap into the inherent greatness of blackness. We must remember that we are the healers, the teachers and the warriors. We are the descendants of the slaves they couldn’t kill. We are the descendants of the those who may have been physically enslaved, but refused to let their minds and spirits be shackled. Forgive my vernacular, but we got to get our minds right. The body speaks the mind. And what our bodies are saying with high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, reproductive organ issues, and gastrointestinal diseases is “we are not living the reality we were created to live”! We must sever ties with Eurocentric thinking, living and being and embrace our African roots.
Being healthy, happy and whole is a hustle. There is no quick fix, there are no shortcuts and there is no luck involved. You must create an environment where healing will thrive. This environment can be created when water becomes your drink of choice, fasting becomes a regular practice, plant-based dieting is life and when the beauty and power of being a melanated being is fully embraced.
