“All but freedom, utter freedom is death”
When I began my weight loss journey in 2010, I just wanted to lose weight and I wanted to feel great when I looked in the mirror. I had no idea that it would lead to an internal rebellion against every facet of Western society. But what I’ve come to realize is that food is much more than calories, fat, protein, vitamins and minerals. It is information that your DNA receives directly and acts accordingly. What you eat dictates everything you do in life.
A friend sent a meme to me that said, “most of the women you know are about one conversation away from crying or screaming”. I asked her, “Why? Why are women one conversation away from crying or screaming?” and she replied, “Life, lol”. That made me feel so sad. Most of us are miserable, stressed, overwhelmed, sick and have a significant amount of drama and dysfunction in our lives and yet we think we live incredibly normal lives. Or do we?
I too lived this incredibly normal life of stress, anxiety, worry and dysfunction until I started eating more healthy and not just kinda, sorta eating healthy. But I really started to eat more healthy. And I realized that I was living a complete lie. The truth is, I was living a life that did not match the reality of my DNA as a Black woman.
Food is more than just calories, it carries a powerful message to your genes; live or die. Food either enhances and brings forth your true identity or it diminishes your true essence to the point where you deteriorate and don’t even know who you are anymore. And when you don’t know who you are, you become whoever society tells you to be. Or not to be.
Fresh, whole, live foods (fruit, vegetables, lentils, whole grains) from Mother Earth are abundant with the information that tells your genes to live, thrive, repair, heal and renew. Dead food (meat, overly processed packaged foods, fast food) are void of any information that will serve you. Instead, it is rife with the message of death, disease, mediocrity and lack and your genes respond accordingly.
For years I fed my body with the dead food that ultimately informed my genes I wasn’t worthy of living a fulfilled life. That stress and worry were not only normal, but deserved, and thus I resigned myself to the misery of working in a racially hostile work environment. I fed myself in a way that made me feel I had to put up with the covert abuse and stay strong.
But when I began to eat live foods and even fast from all food, my genes began to receive a different message. My DNA awakened to its true purpose. That I was born to walk this earth as the god that I am; a child of the African Diaspora and I was not destined to take orders from a white man all my life. And I decided that I was going to quit my job. No, I haven’t done it yet. I’m in preparation mode and I’m a little scared. But I’m going to do it! With every bite, with every hour of fasting, I’m receiving the message, “Quit, Quit”. Can eating healthy really do all of that??? Well, there’s only one way to find out. But in the meantime, what is your food telling you?
