“Water is Life”
Whenever people come to me for health advice, the very first thing I ask them is, “How much water do you drink?” And the first lie they tell me is, “All I drink is water” or “I don’t even drink pop/soda”. And then I make the face
The truth is we are not drinking nearly enough water and the thirst is real. Your body literally craves water. Water is life and is the body’s most essential nutrient.
Why Water is Life:
- Carries waste out of the body
- Flushes toxins
- Purifies your internal system
- Keeps skin soft, supple and moisturized
- Fuels the brain
- Aids in digestion
- Helps your body absorb nutrients
- Aids in weight loss
What Happens When Don’t Drink Enough Water:
- Affects your mood and memory
- Decrease in energy levels
- Muscle soreness
- Acne and dry skin
- Weight gain
How Much Water Should You Drink
At a minimum, you should drink half your body weight in ounces. For example, I weigh about 160 lbs. That means I should drink at least 80 oz of water every day. That equates to nearly five 16.9 oz bottles daily. At first you will use the restroom a lot as your water intake increases, but after a couple of weeks your body will adjust.
Tips for Getting Enough Water
- Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning
- Cut out soda/pop, juice, sports drinks, and other sugary drinks
- Do NOT drink flavored water or add any flavor packets to your water
- Add lemons, limes, cucumbers, ginger or other fresh fruit and herbs to your water for taste
- Always have water with you
- Drink with meals
- Track your water intake with an app
Increasing your water intake is the very first step to reach any health and wellness goal you have. Remember, “pure water is the world’s first and foremost medicine”.
