“Act like a lady, lift like a boss”
This may be my favorite blog post to write of the “How To Be A Mother in Love with Fitness” series. Mainly because I truly found my beauty in a barbell. Something inside of me changed when I began lifting. It’s hard to describe, but I feel a surge of awesomeness when I lift (lol). It’s a feeling of power and of accomplishment that I’ve never felt before. It’s something I’ve become extremely proud of. I’m proud that I can squat nearly 200lbs and deadlift 190lbs. I’m proud to be strong, and walk over to where the boys are and show em how it’s done! See that confidence? That’s what I’ve gained by becoming a mom who lifts. And lifts heavy.
Women and lifting heavy is viewed as taboo. We stick to the treadmill, the elliptical, spin class, yoga, Zumba and then maybe, just maybe pick up some 5lb Dumbbells and do some Bicep curls. I’m here to smash that notion! Ladies, mothers, I’m here to let you know that you will NEVER get the body or physique you truly desire until you let go of fear, doubt, and stereotypes and lift some heavy weights! And I don’t mean the pink 2lb Dumbbells. Nope! Grab the bar, grab a kettlebell, grab that 10lb, 20lb, 25lb dumbbell and lift! Grrrrr! Can you feel the intensity?!?! Lifting brings out the inner beast of confidence that will flow into the other areas of your life. So in addition to having a banging body, you will have a strong mind and a confident heart.
What lifting heavy weights does to your body is amazing. It enhances your curves and melts fat. It transforms and sculpts your body. Most women think that lifting heavy will make them bulky or look like a man. This cannot be further from the truth. From a physiological standpoint, it is impossible. Women do not produce enough testosterone for this to occur. The only way you would look like a man is if you you were also taking some type of hormone or supplement. I’m here to encourage you to start thinking outside of your exercise box. Here are 5 benefits of lifting weights:
1. Increased Confidence
Lifting heavy and becoming stronger will give you a huge boost of confidence that will manifest itself in every area of your life. You will gain an increased confidence in your physical capabilities which will lead to an increased confidence in your other capabilities. You will feel more capable in your career, in school, as a wife and mother. It’s a proud feeling when you can squat more than you did the last time. You are able to hold your head high and know that if you can lift weights, you can just about do anything.
2. Enhance Curves
As you build muscle, your body will begin to transform into a masterpiece. Your waist will become smaller, your legs, thighs and butt will become curvier and your arms and back will create a very sexy, svelte silhouette.
3. Burn Fat/Increased Metabolism
The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest. Having muscles will speed up your metabolism. The irony is that you may not lose pounds; in fact you may gain a couple of pounds. But that’s ok because one pound of fat takes up 18% more space than one pound of muscle. Bottom line, you will stunning with your clothes on or off.
4. Bone Health
Lifting weights increases your bone density and fights loss of bone mass, which means that you will decrease your chances of osteoporosis and fractures later on in life. We’ve all seen older women who are hunched over. How many of your older relatives have had to had hip replacements? Engaging in strength training will prevent this from happening to you.
5. You will be a Wonder Woman
So you work full time, raise your kids, cook, clean, support, love, give, fight, survive AND you can squat 200lbs?!? Lifting heavy weights makes you more incredibly beautiful and strong. You will be apart of an elite group of wonder women. Add weight lifter to your already awesome resume.
